MENSTRUATION IS NORMAL. PERIOD SHAME SHOULD NOT BE. Let's normalize teaching and talking about Menstruation

Why are girls still whispering about something their bodies were designed to do?

Menstruation is a normal part of life. Yet, for too many girls, it remains a subject surrounded by embarrassment, silence, misinformation, and shame.

A girl should never feel that her period is something to hide. She should understand her body, know how to care for herself, and feel safe enough to ask questions without fear of ridicule.

In this episode of the Linda Dominguez Foundation SMILE Mission Literacy Awareness Podcast, we confront the silence surrounding menstruation and explore why menstrual health education must become a normal part of how we educate, support, and empower girls.

We discuss:

- Menstrual education: What every girl deserves to know about her body.
- Breaking period shame: Why embarrassment and silence persist, and how we can change the conversation.
- Period poverty: How limited access to sanitary products affects girls in underserved African communities.
- Menstrual hygiene: Practical knowledge that helps girls protect their health and confidence.
- Safe spaces: Why every girl needs trusted people who will answer her questions with accurate information, compassion, and respect.

Here is the truth: providing sanitary pads matters, but so does providing knowledge. We must do both.

A girl who understands her body is better equipped to care for herself. A community that speaks openly about menstrual health is better positioned to challenge harmful myths. And when families, schools, and communities stop treating menstruation as a source of shame, girls can seek the support they need without feeling embarrassed.

At the Linda Dominguez Foundation, our SMILE Mission is committed to literacy, health education, dignity, and practical support that helps people thrive.

Our message is simple: menstruation is not dirty, shameful, or a reason to silence a girl. It is a normal part of life, and every girl deserves the knowledge and resources to manage it with dignity.

Linda Dominguez Takeaway: We cannot teach girls to be confident about their bodies while teaching them to be ashamed of their biology. The conversation must change, and it starts with us.
