MOZAMBIQUE ENGLISH CLASS: 15 LEARNERS, ONE MISSION, A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES - SMILE Mission English Literacy Initiative
15 LEARNERS. BASIC ENGLISH. BIGGER POSSIBILITIES.
Learning does not always begin in a formal classroom. Sometimes, it begins with a book, a willing learner, a simple greeting, and someone who believes that education should reach everyone.
Through the Linda Dominguez Foundation's SMILE Mission English Literacy Initiative, 15 learners in Mozambique participated in a community English lesson focused on practical speaking skills.
Thirteen learners were seated in front, practising their English greetings, while two stood at the back observing the session. With their books and exercise books in hand, the learners practised simple expressions such as, “Hello! How are you?” and “I'm fine, thank you.”
Every new word was an opportunity to build confidence.
TODAY'S LESSON: GREETINGS AND INTRODUCTIONS
Led by Inoque Sebastião Passial, Mozambique Country Director, the session focused on useful English expressions learners can begin using in everyday conversations.
The lesson covered five key areas:
1. Saying Hello and Good Morning
- Olá! — Hello!
- Oi! — Hi!
- Bom dia! — Good morning!
- Boa tarde! — Good afternoon!
- Boa noite! — Good evening!
2. Asking How Someone Is
- Como você está? — How are you?
- Como vai você? — How are you doing?
- Como você está hoje? — How are you today?
3. Responding to Greetings
- Estou bem, obrigado/a. — I'm fine, thank you.
- Estou bem, e você? — I'm good, and you?
- Estou ótimo/a! E você? — I'm great! And you?
4. Asking Someone's Name
- Qual é o seu nome? — What is your name?
- Como você se chama? — What's your name?
5. Introducing Yourself in English
- Meu nome é... — My name is...
- Eu sou o/a... — I am...
- Olá, meu nome é... Prazer em conhecê-lo/la! — Hello, my name is... Nice to meet you!
These simple expressions provide a foundation for learners to greet others, introduce themselves, and begin participating in English conversations.
WHY THIS MATTERS
English can open doors to further learning, communication, and future opportunities. But access to language education is not equal everywhere, especially in underserved communities.
Our approach is simple: start with the learners, teach practical skills, and build confidence one lesson at a time.
This community-based model demonstrates how learning can take place beyond traditional classrooms when local leadership, educational resources, and a willingness to learn come together.
We are proud of our Mozambique team for bringing the SMILE Mission to life through action.
APPRECIATION TO OUR MOZAMBIQUE TEAM
Well done, Inoque Sebastião Passial!
Thank you for leading this session and helping learners take their first steps towards communicating in English. Your commitment as Mozambique Country Director is helping turn our literacy mission into meaningful learning experiences.
To all 15 learners: keep practising, keep asking questions, and keep believing in your ability to learn. Every new phrase is progress.
At the Linda Dominguez Foundation, we believe that where a child lives should not determine the opportunities available to them.
Linda Dominguez 🗣️: A greeting may seem like a small lesson, but for a learner beginning a new language, it can be the first step towards greater confidence and opportunity.
SMILE Mission: Read. Rise. Thrive.
Transforming futures through compassion, education, and innovation.
